The LSUS Cross Country competed in their first meet of the year at the UT Tyler Braveheart Meet in Tyler, Texas. The course was a hilly 5k through the UT Tyler campus. There were 19 teams competing in the Men's and Women's race.
In the men's race, Freshman Ben Haines (FR/Shreveport, Louisiana) led the Pilots with a finishing time of 19:12 and coming in 37th place. LSUS had a trio of finishers after the 21 minute mark with Angel Marroquin (21:01, 48th), Simon Moradel (SO/Bossier City, Louisiana) (21:26, 50th), and Solomon Layton (FR/Shreveport, Louisiana) (21:46, 53rd) all coming in close together. The team was rounded out with Donald Holland (SR/Bossier City, La.) (24:22, 62nd), Duncan Phelps (SO/Shreveport, Louisiana) (25:27, 63rd), and Ben McRae (SR/Bossier City, Louisiana) (28:36, 64th) finishing in the top 7 for the Pilots. The men's team took 9th overall in the meet.
After the race, Coach Rabo stated, "I'm happy with how our teams ran. We got a late start to practice this year and this was a tough course that was very hilly. In spite of the obstacles, several members of our team ran a personal record (PR) and we have a lot to build on in the coming months."
The Pilot Cross Country teams will next be competing in the Ark-La-Tex Border Dash College Division on September 16th at South Bossier Park.
