On Friday the LSUS Cross Country traveled to San Antonio Texas to compete in the conference cross country meet for the Red River Athletic Conference. The meet was held at the Windcrest Golf Club which proved to be a flat, fast course for the field of runners. For their final meet of the season the women ran a 5k.
The race was the second of the morning. Freshman Leah Silva was the first Pilot across the line in a time of 24:21 for 15th place. She was followed closely by Sarah Haines (SO/Shreveport, Louisiana), running 24:55 to place 17th overall. Kate Inchun (SR/Houston, Texas) finished third for the Pilots, running 25:21 and coming in 18th place. Kayleigh Newman (JR/Bossier City, Louisiana) and Jaleah Turner (JR/Monroe, Louisiana) were fourth and fifth of the scoring five, running 27:57 for 22nd place and 28:55 for 24th place. Rebekah Hensley (JR/Shreveport, Louisiana) and Anne Puckett (FR/Shreveport, Louisiana) rounded out the women's team for LSUS, running 34:58, for 27th and 36:24 for 28th, respectively. The team finished 4th in the conference and each ran a personal best for 5k at the meet.
"I'm extremely proud of our team and what they have accomplished this season," Coach Rabo said after the race. "This team has improved so much from last year and even from the beginning of the season. They came ready to race today and responded well to instructions during the race. Multiple times during the race I told runners they needed to catch the runner in front of them or to pass two runners before the finish. Even though they were tired and hurting, the members of the Pilots Cross Country teams found a way to push a little harder and we were able to improve on our performances from last year. I'm excited to see what the future holds for these individuals and for this program."
