Kourtney Pennywell (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) passed former Pilot Jenna Diakos on the all-time LSUS scoring list as she scored the game's first bucket in Friday night's Red River Athletic Conference matchup with no. 16 Our Lady of the Lake. Pennywell entered the game tied with Diakos with 1,531 career points as the question was not when but how soon would she take the crown.
"I can't reiterate enough how blessed I am and it's very exciting to have broken such an amazing record, but that's not where I'm going to stop," said the new record holder. "I'm very honored and blessed to be able to play with a wonderful team and coaching staff. I would not have accomplished this goal without the motivation of my family, team, and coaches," added Pennywell.
The most impressive part about her record is that she has accomplished this milestone in just three seasons while Diakos was a four-year player. In fact, Pennywell has missed some time due to injury but so did Diakos.
One thing is for sure, two of the greatest players to ever dawn the Pilot uniform are also two of the greatest people to ever play here. Both players gave it their all no matter if it was in practice, on the court or serving in the community.
"I am so lucky and honored to be coaching her," said current LSUS coach Curtis Loyd. "When you hear her story you know she is willing to do and sacrifice anything for her team to be better than any award or accolade that she can get. She is a true champion in all sense of the word."
Pennywell could pass Diakos again on the all-time list in rebounding. Pennywell currently is 2nd with 810 while Diakos collected 845. In addition Pennywell also holds the record with 129 blocked shots.
