ALEXANDRIA, La. – Kourtney Pennywell (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) was named the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Year as voted on by the RRAC Women's Basketball Coaches for the 2016-17 season. This is the second Player of the Year award for Pennywell as she claimed the same honor for the 2014-15 season when she also won the Defensive and Newcomer of the Year honors.
"KP has always played at a high level whether it be AAU, high school or here at the collegiate level," said LSUS coach Curtis Loyd. "She knew she needed to complete her game mentally and physically plus work on a few more skills. She will probably tell you that she is just as shocked as any to get Player of the Year plus she would give credit to all of her teammates. "I'm proud of her because she has led with me and this team throughout the entire year."
Pennywell is hands down the best women's player in the school's history and she has the numbers to back it up. She is the all-time scoring leader (1,573) and shot blocker (129). She is also just 19 rebounds shy of holding that record as well as she has amassed 827 total boards so far in her career. Jenna Diakos, whom she just passed for the scoring title, is currently the leader with 845.
This season KP ranked in the top 5 in the RRAC in scoring/game, field goal percentage, blocks and total rebounds per game. Pennywell helped the Pilots set the new winning streak to 14 games this season, can she help them do something else they have never done like win the conference tournament? Only time will tell but with the Pilots having the reigning Player and Coach of the Year on their side-anything can happen.
