SHREVEPORT, La. – The LSU Shreveport Pilots started a conference series Friday with a twin-bill against the Huston-Tillotson Rams.  The Pilots won the first game by a score of 17-4 and lost the second 13-10.  The Pilots are now 19-8 overall and 6-2 in RRAC play.  The Rams are 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the league.

GAME 1 (W, 17-4)
Vaughn Shapen (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) led the pilots to the game one victory going 4-for-4 with a homerun, single, and two triples finishing just a double away from the cycle as he drove in five runs.

"Vaughn is a talented player who committed himself to an approach today and stuck with it," said LSUS coach Brent Lavallee

The Pilots were able to capitalize on 15 free baserunners from the Rams pitching staff (nine walks and six hit-by-pitches,) and had 13 hits.

"We got to work hard yesterday at practice," said Coach Lavallee after the past two games the Pilots only scored three runs in the Texas Wesleyan two day stint.  "The guys believe in themselves and were able to get some good pitches to hit and didn't miss them."

Alex Naiser (SO/Cypress, Texas) (5-0) got the start for the Pilots and got the win due to a pre-determined pitch count.  Justin Donaldson (JR/Walker, Louisiana) and David Jones (FR/Denham Springs, Louisiana) each pitched two innings a piece to close out game one.

GAME 2 (L, 13-10)
The Rams jumped out to an early 10-0 lead on the Pilots who were able to get back into it to make things interesting.  But it seemed like every time the Pilots would get in striking distance, the Rams were able to stretch the lead.

"Anytime you get off to a start like that it is tough," said Lavallee.  "It showed a lot for the guys to come back and make that a game and fight all the way to the end."

Offensively the Pilots were led by Ryan Pouwells (JR/Surrey, British Columbia) who finished 3-for-6 with a double, triple, and two runs batted in.  Blake Buller (JR/Deville, Louisiana) also had a good game at the plate going 3-for-5 with a RBI.

"Tomorrow is a big game for us to come and try and win the series," said Lavallee.
