SHREVEPORT, La. - Pat Day (JR/Tyler, Texas) recorded a five-out save as the LSU Shreveport Pilots held on to defeat the Texas A&M - Texarkana Eagles 4-3 on Friday afternoon at Pilot Field in the 2017 Red River Athletic Conference Tournament. LSUS improves to 35-18 while TAMUT slips to 30-22.

"Pat did a great job in a tough situation out of the pen for us today," said LSUS coach Brent Lavallee. "He wants to be in that spot and he flourished today."

The Pilots got the scoring started first with a pair of runs in the 4th inning as Brenden Meade (JR/Shreveport, Louisiana) scored on a single from Layton Laird (JR/Baton Rouge, Louisiana) while Matthew Hammock (JR/El Dorado, Arkansas) scored later in the inning on a double-play ball.

LSUS added single runs in the 6th and 7th innings as Vaughn Shapen (SR/Shreveport, Louisiana) drove in a run with a single and Kevin VanAsselberg (JR/Alexandria, Louisiana) drove in the other with a double.

Renny Tolentino (JR/Miami, Florida) (5-1) picked up the win for the Pilots but had to wiggle out of trouble as Texarkana stranded eight of the runners he allowed on base. He struck out a total of 10 batters but the eight walks was what made it difficult. The Eagles stranded two runners in the 1st, 3rd, and 6th innings while leaving one aboard in the 2nd and 4th.

"Renny did a great job in a clutch situation for us today," said Lavallee. "We needed a performance like that in a big game. We put the pressure on all day offensively and we knew that Renny would give us a chance."

Landon Lewis (JR/Bossier City, Louisiana) was the bridge between Tolentino and Day as he allowed just one run in the 8th while inducing a double-play ball in the 7th.

Day, who recorded his 2nd save of the season, overcame adversity as he escaped the jam in the 8th as Texarkana left the potential tying and go-ahead runs on first and second following a two-out error.

There were three Pilots that had a pair of hits in today's 10-hit performance as Ryan Pouwells (JR/Surrey, British Columbia) went 2-for-5 while Meade and VanAsselberg were both 2-for-3. Unfortunately Francisco Rodriguez (SR/Loiza, Puerto Rico) did not have a hit as he was 0-for-4 snapping his 24-game hitting streak.

The Pilots advance in the winner's bracket and will face the winner of the LSUA and Jarvis while the Eagles will face elimination tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Southwest.
