Dr. David Gustavson begins his second year as a “volunteer” fundraiser and Associate Athletics Director at LSUS, having retired in May as Professor Emeritus of Education and Dean of the College of Business, Education and Human Development. He joined the LSUS faculty as an Assistant Professor in Fall 1974, the first semester in which senior-level courses were offered with LSUS’ first commencement the following May.
He served as Director of Field Experiences and Chair of the Department of Education prior to his appointment as Dean. He was Faculty Athletics Representative in the late 1980’s for LSUS to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and recently completed his second stint as a member of the Athletics Council. His career has come full circle as his former student, Athletics Director Chad McDowell, is now his boss!
Before coming to LSUS, Dr. Gustavson taught high school English and coached baseball at Southwestern High School in his home town of Jamestown, NY following completion of a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and History at Murray State University in Kentucky. He returned to Murray State to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education, followed by the completion of a Doctor of Education degree with emphasis in Secondary Education and English/Speech at Indiana University.
A lifelong avid sports fan, Dr. Gustavson is married to the former Ginger Colvin, a counselor at C. E. Byrd High School. Ginger played basketball at LSUS in the early ‘90’s and is still second in the LSUS record book with a season average of over 23 point per game. His daughter, Kristi is an attorney with the local firm of Cook, Yancey, King and Galloway. Kristi and her husband, Craig Harris, are the proud parents of the Gustavsons’ granddaughter, Malin. Dr. Gustavson resides in Shreveport with his wife and their two sons, Sam and Jack, who are both students at Byrd.
