HOBBS, N.M. — No. 1 LSU Shreveport etched its name in NAIA baseball history on Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader against the University of the Southwest to remain perfect at 39-0. The Pilots claimed a 7-1 victory in Game 1 before completing the sweep with a 12-2 win in Game 2 at Jake Williams Field.
LSUS also remained perfect in Red River Athletic Conference play, improving to 23-0.
Game 1: LSUS 7, Southwest 1
Isaac Rohde (10-0) continued his dominant season on the mound for the Pilots, tossing seven innings while allowing four hits, one run, one walk, and striking out eight.
Offensively, Diego Aragon powered the lineup with a home run, while Ryan Davenport drove in two runs. Josh Gibson, Austin Gomm, DJ Walker, and Aragon each contributed RBIs. Jackson Syring added a double, and Vantrel Reed swiped a base.
For Southwest, Brady Cardozo doubled and Alex Montiel provided the Mustangs' lone RBI. Miguel Olivas (7-4) took the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) over six innings with five strikeouts.
Game 2: LSUS 12, Southwest 2
The Pilots' bats exploded, racking up extra-base hits and aggressive baserunning. Ian Montz led the offensive surge with four RBIs and a triple, while Jackson Syring drove in two and added a stolen base. Anthony Swenda and Jose Sallorin also contributed to the scoring effort.
Josh Gibson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Angel Rodriguez, Vantrel Reed, and Syring each knocked in runs as well.
Draven Zeigler (9-0) earned the win, tossing five innings while allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), three walks, and striking out seven.
For the Mustangs, Brian Ledezma doubled, and Montiel and Sage Bonner each drove in a run. Brady Cardozo stole a base. Josh Martin (4-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits in three innings.
Up Next
LSUS returns home for Senior Weekend, presented by D-Bats Shreveport, on April 18-19. The Pilots will face the University of Houston-Victoria, with the series opener set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
