Ottawa
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — After a nearly three-hour rain delay in Game 2 pushed the start of Game 3 to 9 p.m., LSU Shreveport delivered a steady performance late into the night, earning a 5-2 win over Ottawa University on Monday in the 2025 NAIA Baseball Opening Round (Shreveport Bracket).
The Pilots (52-0) struck early, putting up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Ryan Davenport got the scoring started, coming home on a Vantrel Reed RBI single to right center. Jackson Syring followed with a two-run triple to right, bringing in Reed and Austin Gomm. Anthony Swenda capped the rally with a single to left, plating Syring to make it 4-0.
Ottawa responded in the fourth, getting on the board with an RBI groundout from Jackson Alaniz that scored Dylan Garcia. Alaniz added another RBI in the sixth, singling to left to score Jeremy Freeman, who had stolen second earlier in the inning.
LSUS added a key insurance run in the eighth. Swenda drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Reed and make it 5-2, with Cooper Huspen and I. Montz moving up on the play.
The Pilots' defense held firm down the stretch. Ottawa's Jaquavius Davis grounded into a double play in a key moment, and the Braves turned a double play of their own earlier in the game with Jackson Alaniz and Anthony Soria combining on the turn.
LSUS stayed active on the basepaths, led by Josh Gibson with two stolen bases. Gomm and Reed each added one as well.
Isaac Rohde (13-0) picked up the win for the Pilots, allowing just three hits and two runs over six innings, walking one and striking out eight. Lex Meinderts earned his seventh save of the season, tossing three scoreless innings with two hits allowed and six strikeouts.
Ryan Gil (1-3) took the loss for Ottawa, going six innings and giving up six hits, four runs, four walks, and five strikeouts.
LSUS advances in the Shreveport Bracket and will face Johnson University on Tuesday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m. at Pilot Field.
