No. 2 LSU Shreveport Opens RRAC Tournament Play Against Southwest Friday at Pilot Field
SHREVEPORT, La. -- Postseason baseball returns to Pilot Field on Friday night as No. 2 seed LSU Shreveport opens the Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament First Round against No. 7 seed University of the Southwest at 6 p.m. in the opening game of a best-of-three series with a trip to the RRAC final site in Sterlington, Louisiana, on May 1-3 on the line.
The Pilots (36-12, 20-7 RRAC) enter tournament play with momentum after closing the regular season with a 25-8 road win over Central Baptist and will look to continue their strong play at home, where they have posted a 27-4 record this season. Southwest (15-30, 11-16 RRAC) arrives in Shreveport looking to extend its season and capitalize on a postseason opportunity despite entering as the lower seed. With both teams battling in a best-of-three format for a berth in Sterlington, the opening-round series carries all the intensity of championship baseball.
LSU Shreveport brings one of the nation's most explosive offenses into postseason play, hitting .347 as a team with 517 hits, 489 runs scored, 54 home runs, and 188 stolen bases. The Pilots' lineup features production throughout the order, led by Carlos Sanchez, who enters the tournament batting .392 with 73 hits, 73 RBI, 11 home runs, and 28 extra-base hits. Makana Olaso has added 14 home runs and 52 RBI, while Landon Hunt is hitting .429 and Quaterrion Walton has scored 53 runs while stealing 31 bases. Spencer Sullivan has added 51 runs scored and 38 RBI, while Carlos Vega has driven in 37 runs, helping power an offense averaging more than 10 runs per game.
Southwest will counter with an offense that has shown the ability to produce timely hits and pressure opponents on the bases. The Mustangs are hitting .301 as a team and are led by Alex Montiel, who is batting .357 with 63 hits and 23 doubles, while Mark Gonzales is hitting .339 with 49 RBI and Jose Rosales has driven in 56 runs. Josh Loving has added speed with 14 stolen bases, and Donog Joon Shin has contributed a .411 average. Though Southwest enters as the underdog, the Mustangs have enough offensive firepower to challenge any opponent when their lineup is clicking.
Pitching could prove to be the deciding factor, and LSU Shreveport enters with a significant edge on the mound. The Pilots carry a 3.40 team ERA and have struck out 380 batters while holding opponents to a .242 average. Brock Lucas has anchored the rotation with an 8-2 record, a 2.12 ERA, and 90 strikeouts, while David Hankins has gone 7-1 with a 2.95 ERA. Jacobo Gallegos, Evan Gant, and Robert Lastra provide additional starting depth, while Jack Savitch, Camden Stephens, and Virot Siharath give the Pilots reliable bullpen options late in games.
Southwest's pitching staff has battled through inconsistency but has generated strikeouts, recording 343 on the year. The Mustangs have relied on Kanyon Johnson, Victor Quinonez, Miguel Olivas, and Noah Nunez for major innings, and Southwest will likely need a strong outing from its staff to slow the Pilots' powerful lineup. If the game remains tight into the late innings, pitching depth and execution could decide who advances.
The teams met earlier this season at Pilot Field, where LSU Shreveport swept the three-game series by scores of 11-5, 10-3, and 13-3, but postseason baseball often resets the script. Southwest enters with nothing to lose and an opportunity to turn the page, while the Pilots will look to defend home field and continue their push toward another conference championship.
Beyond Thursday's result, the stakes are clear. The series winner advances to the RRAC Tournament final site in Sterlington for the conference championship, while the losing team sees its season come to an end. For LSU Shreveport, it is the next step in what it hopes will be a deep postseason run. For Southwest, it is a chance to play spoiler and keep its season alive.
With postseason pressure, a home crowd, and a berth in Sterlington on the line, the opening-round series promises playoff energy at Pilot Field. Game 1 is set for Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m., followed by Game 2 on Saturday, April 25 at 6 p.m. If necessary, Game 3 will be played Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. as the Pilots begin their pursuit of a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament title.
