Pilots Drop Thursday Match to Mustangs
Hobbs, New Mexico- The Pilots Women's soccer team (3-5-2) dropped their match Thursday afternoon to Red River Athletic Conference opponent Southwest by a score of 2-1. With the loss the Pilots move to 8-5-3 overall and 3-5-2 in conference play. The Mustangs improve their season to 5-3-2 in conference and 7-5-2 overall.
How it Happened
The teams went head to head from the start with the Mustangs and Pilots battling hard for possession of the ball. The first fifteen minutes of the half were rather uneventful as each team would gain possession and run towards the other's net before having the ball snagged. 15 minutes into the match the Pilots had outshot the Mustangs four to one, but it remained scoreless. It would be the Mustangs however who broke through and found the back of the net in the 17th minute of the match. With the goal came a new wave of fire from the Mustangs and they turned the tables, firing off four more shots to the Pilots one. The Pilots weren't done however, and Abbie Rutledge was able to send a ball over the top to Allison Clear which she skillfully clipped over the top of the goalkeeper. Clear leveled the field once more in the 35th minute. Before the half Clear and Yuvia Vazquez would each post one more shot, and Carlota Alcalde would face one as well. Alcalde finished the first half with three saves.
The Pilots came out ready to battle and Clear led the way taking a shot just four seconds into the half. The teams continued to go head to head for 20 minutes still tied, but it would again be the Mustangs that capitalized. A foul in the Pilot's 18-yard box led to the penalty that gave the Mustangs the lead once more in the 66th minute. The rest of the match remained uneventful as the teams were only able to get a combined three shots off in the last 25 minutes before the clock expired.
The Women's Soccer team will be back in action Saturday October 29th as they take on Paul Quinn in their final conference game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:00pm CT in Dallas, Texas.
